Warm All Over

Last week’s e-blast had amazing results!
When we announced the need for “warm” items to help our customers without heat, the response was amazing.

Within one hour after the message was published Wal-Mart donated blankets, the Marriott Hotels donated duvets, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church donated long-johns and blankets, and word has it the need was announced at a local church service.

One loyal donor even responded she would love to help but had limited resources. We liked hearing from her and getting her heartfelt message. Thank you so much for helping your neighbors stay WARM ALL OVER!

We are so proud!

This past Wednesday Bluffton Self Help hosted the first in a series of workshops as part of our mission to move people toward self-help. The purpose of these workshops is to offer resources and information to our neighbors.

We all waiting, in anxious anticipation to see how many people would attend. This first workshop was about affordable housing and funds available for home repairs in the Town of Bluffton.

We were pleasantly surprised.

Eight people attended and out of the eight, four people had suggestions on future workshops. It is true “BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME.”

Our next workshop will focus on trauma and how dealing with it can move a person toward recovery. In the upcoming weeks the workshops will deal with rental rights and responsibilities, budgeting, credit, available housing in the area, language skills, support groups for single parents, elderly and disabled, how to apply for education assistance, financial assistance and a swipe card. The list goes on.

We will keep you informed on how well we are doing. We are so proud!

Warm All Over

A few years ago I received a Christmas gift from my son. It is a small portable heater. He knows I often get cold when the temperatures drop below tropic levels.

As I listened to the news and received phone calls from clients of Bluffton Self Help, that unopened gift popped into my mind. Should I bring it to Bluffton Self Help and give it to one of our clients?

This is a dilemma because the use of small portable heaters are dangerous to use in small homes because they often cause fires. They also result in very high utility bills.

What’s the answer? I got it. We need electric blankets. They are less dangerous and they keep people warm. Bluffton Self Help staff will make sure the electric blankets get to those in need.

Drop off a new or used electric blanket today. That way we can all stay warm all over!!!

I guess I’ll keep that unopened small heater.

Bluffton Self Help Volunteers are The Salt of the Earth!

When I hear that term I think of our volunteers at Bluffton Self Help. Especially after a hectic, task-heavy six weeks. We are fortunate to have over 160 volunteers. They assist in writing thank you notes, entering data, answering the ever- ringing phone and track donations. They work the food distributions, sort and hang clothing, check in and check out, answer questions, and feel the joy of sharing hope with our clients.

On the floor we have amazing shift leaders who work with their team of volunteers to distribute food and clothing. Let’s not forget the “interviewers” who takes down the information when we are asked for emergency financial assistance.

Each and every volunteer is so valued!!!! WE couldn’t help our neighbors without their help.

And OUR board members and former board members who can’t seem to stop feeling the “passion” you have when you experience Bluffton Self Help. Our marketing expert, Christine, who even though she moved to North Carolina, still is very involved. Or our Head Elves John, Jim and Kathy, who worked countless hours in the pouring rain to distribute toys to hundreds of children this holiday season. Whew…today was the final day for the toy shop!

Among our favorite holiday gifts are:
* Volunteers who coming in during the hectic hours
* Thank you note from one of our clients and his family
* Seeing Tom Henderson, our volunteer who returned to volunteer after a year-long illness – what a great sight to see!!!
* And, that we all survived another holiday season!

Happy Holidays!!!!

Greatest means different things to different people.

When I think of “greatest” I think of Allen Kupfer, now a Sun City resident. Kupfer, a 90-year-old man of Polish descent, is a humanitarian and a Holocaust Survivor who says he “knows the price of freedom.”

By the time he reached the United States, his parents had both been killed in the Holocaust, along with 140 other members of his family

What I admire most about Kupfer is his passion for what he believes in that never wanes. As his career progressed, he never stopped giving back and still today gives of his heart, time and resources to causes he believes in. He does this in honor of the strangers who hid him during his darkest hours.

In an article that appeared in the Island Packet on May 28, 2012 Kupfer is quoted as saying, “I didn’t know those people, and they were willing to save another human being. That’s probably the greatest calling a person can have. That’s the peak of humanity.”

We at Bluffton Self Help are so proud to have him as our ambassador and a board member since 2011.

Kupfer is known in the low country, as the man, for the past 15 years, who tells the stories of his survival in area schools. He tries to impact the spirit of sacrifice, honor, survival and the horrific effects of prejudice.

This week we celebrated Veterans Day. Kupfer knows and says he understands the greatest sacrifice made for people like him. “In my life, this country never disappointed me.”

We salute our veterans and the people like Kupfer who know first-hand what freedom means. Thank you to our veterans and those who served and are now serving in our military. You are all amongst the “Greatest.”
