The Tiger Bass Race Series is a great example of community working together to create an event focusing on fitness, family, fun and philanthropy. It has become a signature event for the community because of the strong participation and enthusiasm from its attendees, volunteers, sponsors and Hampton Lake property owners.

The race committee hopes to reach its goal of 500 participants and make a donation to Bluffton Self Help, whose mission is to help Blufftonians in critical need of short-term financial assistance and food and clothing, while supporting them to become more self-reliant.

In 2013, Tiger Bass Race organizers hoped to have 250 participants and raise $10,000 for Bluffton Self Help. They exceeded their goals with 300-plus runners and more than 60 sponsors. This success meant that they were able to donate $12,000 to Bluffton Self Help.

2012-school-savingsHave you seen them? Back-packs, binders and pencils are on display in major stores! Families are preparing for the back-to-school season! While many children find this to be an exciting time, parents are feeling the anxiety of the expenses ahead. Let’s face it, school supplies are pricey – many folks report spending nearly $100 just on the supplies needed for elementary age children! Some are unable to afford this type of expense, even for education. As a result, children suffer.

Children who start their first day of school without the necessary school supplies feel embarrassed.  They lack the confidence to connect with their peer group. This rocky start sets the tone for the rest of the school year. Unfortunately students can unknowingly segregate themselves into the “haves” and the” have-nots.”

Bluffton Self Help works directly with the Bluffton community school social workers to make sure the children in need receive the supplies to get them off to a great start!  (Visit Bluffton Self Help’s Facebook page to hear one social worker say thank you!!!)

According to Kidsinneedfoundation.org, children without school supplies have lower attendance rates, are more likely to do poorly in school, and eventually drop out. Without an education they are more likely to get in trouble, be unemployed, and have no future.

Luckily, you can help!   Spread kindness by helping the children in our community. When you’re at the store shopping with your own children or grandchildren, please consider picking up a few extra items and dropping them off at Bluffton Self Help. We’ll make sure they get to the Bluffton kids who need them!

Every child deserves to start the school year with all of the supplies they need.  You can help!

“Children need a good education today to have hope for a better tomorrow. Going to school is one of the best ways to break the cycle of hunger and poverty.” ~ feedthechildren.org

bsh_givephoto - Version 2photo - Version 2It’s always exciting when an agency finds a remarkable and talented community member to serve on their board with much needed expertise. It’s even more exciting when that new board member opens up a whole new way to add financial resources to the agency’s bottom line.

That’s what happened this past month at Bluffton Self Help.

Meet Charlie Russ, a resident of Palmetto Bluff, who surprised the board members and staff by donating shares of stock as a thank you for joining the board of directors at Bluffton Self Help. Charlie and his wife Dianne formerly volunteered on Wednesday evenings during food distribution. Dianne was also one of the contributors to the Palmetto Bluff Cookbook, a project that resulted in over $11,000 in income to Bluffton Self Help in 2013. Now Charlie, with years of corporate legal experience, is a member of our board.

This was Bluffton Self Help’s first-ever stock donation. It came on the dawn of our investment subcommittee’s efforts to finalize a policy and start the selection process for a potential investment manager. In the upcoming month, this task should be completed. Last month, the board approved a draft of the investment policy statement currently being reviewed by three potential investment managers.

We take our role as a steward of your donations very seriously. Gifts like this one insures that the mission will continue and Mrs. Ida Martin’s legacy will be secured.

By receiving this stock gift, we learned a lot in the process. We are now trained and equipped to accept more stock donations.

Stock is used in a situation where a donor has stock that has appreciated significantly in value – in that case when the agency sells the stock to realize its dollar value, the donor avoids paying the tax he or she would otherwise have to pay on the amount of the appreciation. So, for example, if a donor bought the stock two years ago for $10 per share and it’s now worth $30 per share, a gift of 10 shares only cost the donor $100 but the agency reaps $300 as the amount of the gift and the donor avoids paying tax on the $200 of appreciation.

If you have some shares of stock you want to donate to Bluffton Self Help, call us.

Charlie, thank you from the bottom of our heart for investing in your neighbors and the mission of Bluffton Self Help. ###

What is it?
It’s easy and fun! Simply pledge $2.00 for every 2 made during the 2014 Players Amateur tournament July 7-13th at Berkeley Hall Club in Bluffton, SC.

Each member upon pledging will receive one special logoed shirt and hat designed for 2 Club supporters only (Valued at $60.00). The cost of the shirt and hat will be billed upon your commitment to the 2 Club and deducted from the total amount owed to charity. At the conclusion of the event the total number of 2’s will be calculated and members will be notified.

Here’s how it works!
In 2013, 138 two’s were made during tournament play which helped the 2 Club donate $10,000 to local charities.

If 150 – 2′s are made during 2014 Players Amateur: 150 x $2.00 = $300.00
$300.00 less $60.00 (payment for one shirt and hat) = $240.00 total contribution by the 2 Club member!

Questions?
If you would like to join or receive more information about the 2 Club please contact Andy McMillen, Tournament Coordinator, Players Amateur at andy@heritageclassicfoundation.com or at 843.671.2448 Ext. 242.
